Firstly, check the terms of use with your operator. Some may agree to extend your connection to the country you are going to. Otherwise, try to avoid using Internet and cellular data which can inflate your invoice. It is advisable to completely disable your 3G connection and cellular data. As for calls, be careful when answering: you will be invoiced if someone calls you.

Cheaper alternatives

How to offset this kind of problem? If you use a smartphone, applications like Skype or Viber can be used to call free of charge, provided of course that the person calling uses it too. Next, think of Wi-Fi networks: you can use them, usually free of charge, to surf the Internet without your phone bill being affected. For standard mobile phones, use the SMS alternative: they cost less and make for rapid communication. Lastly, you can also buy a phone card or local SIM card if your telephone doesn't work abroad.

Some tips prior to departure

  • Remember to record on your telephone the number of the helpdesk as well as the number of your travel insurance policy
  • Also record an emergency number
  • Record the numbers with the prefix of your country (+44 for the UK).
  • Beware of pickpockets!
